Senior trainee representative, CO Academic Committee: role description

The Clinical Oncology Academic Committee seeks to advise the Faculty on matters relating to academic development and Clinical Oncology research. These include methods by which the RCR can encourage and facilitate research in Clinical Oncology, how to increase the number and quality of research-active and academic Clinical Oncologists within the UK, and how to provide active support to trainee and consultant Clinical Oncologists commencing or developing a research-based career.

Eligibility and terms of office

In addition to meeting the academic criteria, applicants must be a current UK trainee with at least one year of training left and a current member or Fellow of The Royal College of Radiologists.

Representatives will be appointed for a period of two years. If a representative completes training during their two year term, they will not be required to stand down immediately and may remain on the Committee for up to six months post CCT or until the end of their two year term, whichever comes first.

All applications will be assessed by a panel consisting of the Chair, one member of the Academic Committee and the Chair of the Oncology Registrars' Forum (ORF).

Who is eligible?

A senior trainee who satisfies one or more of the following criteria:

    1. Currently out of programme undertaking research
    2. Recently completed a PhD or MD;
    3. In a Clinical Lecturer post.

The trainee should have at least one year of training remaining.

Time commitment

The main responsibilities of the representative is to attend the three Academic Committee meetings held each year, to read papers in advance and to contribute to discussions. Two out of three meetings are virtual, with one being in-person at the Royal College of Radiologists, London. The time commitment for each meeting would be 2 hours plus travelling time and the time required for reading of papers in preparation. ORF meetings would require a similar time commitment. E-mail discussions of relevant topics will also require a time commitment but this is not easily quantifiable. Travel expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with the College's travel and expenses policy.

The first meeting of the CO Academic Committee that the post-holder will attend will take place in-person on Thursday 19 September 2024. If you are applying for the above position, please reserve this date in your diary.

The representative is expected to attend meetings of the Academic Committee and the Oncology Registrars' Forum. They will be expected to contribute to the Committee's discussion and decision making processes, and to relay information from the College to the ORF and academic trainees.
