Radiation Safety Adviser: role description
Eligibility and terms of office
The adviser will be a Fellow of the College, who is resident in the United Kingdom and at the time of his or her application is in active clinical practice and holds a current licence to practise. He or she will have knowledge and experience of issues relating to radiation safety and associated matters.
During the work as adviser, the appointee should discuss any concerns or issues arising as to (perceived) conflicts of interest with the CR Medical Director for Professional Practice.
The appointment will be for a period of three years. The post-holder may be re-appointed for a further period of three years if appropriate and agreed.
Role description
The principal duties of the adviser will be to:
- Advise and represent the CR Faculty on issues relating to radiation safety, in particular legislation such as IR(ME)R and MARS
- Liaise with outside organisations (including the UK Health Security Agency, Care Quality Commission, Society and College of Radiographers, British Institute of Radiology, Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine, the Society of Radiation Protection and so on) on behalf of the CR Faculty
- Research and draft appropriate advice and guidance for members and Fellows
- Ensure new College publications contain accurate and up to date advice on radiation safety where relevant
- Work with College staff to ensure the Faculty website contains relevant, useful and up-to-date information on radiation safety issues
- Provide an annual report of activities to the Professional Support and Standards Board (PSSB)
- Ensure that new radiation safety guidance and regulations from external bodies are identified and disseminated.
The adviser will be invited to attend the CR Professional Support and Standards Board and will report between meetings to the CR Medical Director Professional Practice who chairs PSSB.
Experience and competencies
In order to fulfil this role the individual will be expected to demonstrate:
- A proven track record of expertise in providing radiation safety guidance and leadership
- Significant knowledge and understanding of radiation safety issues
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the capacity to support and influence others;
- The ability to develop and build effective multi-professional relationships
- Experience and expertise in the drafting of complex publications and/or web-based resources.

Applications will be ranked against the person specification by a selection panel comprising of the Medical Director, Professional Practice Clinical Radiology and the Vice-President, Clinical Radiology. It is not anticipated that it will be necessary to hold interviews.

Time commitment
There is no specific time commitment for this role as the majority of the work will be undertaken as required and remotely. Much of the work will involve online reading, reviewing, emailing and drafting.
Overall it is anticipated that this role will require an average of approximately one day per month. The appointee will liaise closely with the CR Medical Director for Professional Practice.
The adviser will be expected to provide appropriate input into meetings of the CR PSSB, either virtually or in person, when matters relating to radiation protection are to be discussed. The Board meets three times a year.
Physical presence at meetings with other stakeholders will amount to no more than a few days per year. Participation in such events will be discussed and agreed in advance with the CR Medical Director for Professional Practice.
Operation in the role
Diary-based administrative support will be provided by staff. It is envisaged the adviser will establish a virtual team of clinical radiologists with radiation safety experience to provide support and expertise to assist him/her as needed for the role.
The adviser will not express any opinion or make any statement publicly or to the media that is held out to be a view from the College without first consulting and agreeing the approach with the CR Medical Director for Professional Practice.
Should the adviser recommend that any activity such as conducting a survey or endorsing work produced by others would be appropriate, this should first be discussed with the MDPP as such work will need to be agreed, usually by CR Officers, in advance. No budget is allocated specifically to the adviser’s activities.
Resources
This is a voluntary role. The RCR will meet travel expenses incurred by the adviser in travelling to the RCR and other events, in accordance with the College travel and expenses policy.
Confidentiality
The adviser shall comply with the provisions of the General Data Protection Regulation as regards processing and disclosure of any personal data that is made available to them as part of their work for the RCR.
The adviser will from time to time be provided with documents at various stages of development prior to their formal approval and publication, which are to be kept confidential. The adviser shall not disclose any confidential information to an outside person or organisation.
Copyright and intellectual property
The RCR will hold the intellectual property and copyright of any documents or publications produced by the individual in their capacity as the Faculty’s adviser. The adviser will be required to assign these rights to the RCR.
