The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) is piloting an exam preparation course aimed at supporting trainees ahead of their CR1 physics exam. The course will combine revision of key physics knowledge underpinning the generation of radiological studies with tips and techniques for exam preparation, as well as pitfalls to avoid. 

To support the delivery of this, we are seeking individuals to join our Medical Physicist Faculty, overseen by the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR). As a member of the Medical Physicist Faculty, you can choose to be involved in the delivery of our pilot course and / or help develop future course content. 

What’s involved?

  • Working with the RCR Learning team to support the pilot of an online physics exam preparation course (to be held as a two-day event in April 2025) and to develop this as part of the core annual programme from 2025 onwards, including ensuring a review of quality and delivery. 
  • Delivering teaching based on demand (envisaged to be approximately three times per year from 2026 onwards)
  • Attending update meetings / calls with RCR Learning team supporting with strategy, operational delivery and/or evaluation of the course. 
  • Participating in the annual faculty meeting to discuss future medical physicist activities
  • Undertaking other duties relevant to the scope of the role in line with the Faculty and RCR strategic priorities

What support will I receive from the RCR?

The Medical Physicist Faculty is supported by the Faculty Lead and other members, as well as staff from the RCR Learning team who can provide expertise in developing, marketing, and delivering educational resources and will help you with all aspects of your role. The role holder will have a dedicated staff point of contact within the team. All administrative support will be provided by RCR Learning staff.

The commitment

  • Attend planning meetings organised by RCR staff 
  • Develop and deliver teaching material for the pilot 
  • Help with the evaluation of the pilot course
  • Support any further development work based on delegate and faculty feedback 
  • Pilot development to commence in November 2024 aiming to deliver in April 2025

Credentials

To put your name forward for the role of Medical Physicist Faculty, you will preferably be a member or Fellow of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), or overseas equivalent and / or Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Essential knowledge, skills and experience

  • Working knowledge of one or more types of medical imaging including MRI, CT, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, radionuclide, angiography
  • Knowledge of current radiation legislation
  • Strong command of spoken and written English
  • Ability to communicate the scientific basis of imaging to a medical audience
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with a range of stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds
  • A passion for and experience of supporting the drafting of new educational resources, alongside delivery and evaluation of developed courses
  • Strong time management skills
  • A commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion in practice

Desirable experience and skills:

  • Experience of working in a hospital setting
  • Understanding of the design / manufacturing process of commonly used medical imaging equipment
  • Experience within quality assurance and risk management of imaging processes

Authorised Representation
The Medical Physicist Faculty is asked to discuss opportunities to represent RCR, prior to agreement. This ensures that communications accurately reflect the RCR's official stance and commitments. 

Intellectual Property Rights
Any documents or publications created by the individual in their capacity as RCR Medical Physicist Faculty are considered the intellectual property of the RCR. Therefore, the role holder is required to assign these rights to the RCR, maintaining the organisation's ownership and control over its intellectual assets.
