AI deployment fundamentals for medical imaging
Date: 2024
The AI deployment fundamentals for medical imaging guidance was developed by an expert panel who identified minimum standards for providers to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) solutions in radiology and focuses on the period between the algorithm achieving regulatory approval and its business-as-usual deployment. These minimum standards have been categorised into the following four stages:
- Build a team to define the scope of the project
- Identify available AI tools
- Generate evidence and evaluate the tool
- Acquisition and deployment.
This guidance targets imaging networks, health boards and NHS trusts looking to evaluate and deploy AI solutions in radiology that have been certified and registered with the UK Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority (MHRA). Within this guidance chest X-ray AI is used as an example but is broadly applicable to other certified AI solutions.
When reading this guidance, please consider the following reflective questions:
- What are the benefits to my service of implementing this guidance?
- What are the key barriers to implementing this guidance in my service?
- Does the guidance incite any ideas for quality improvement projects that I, or others in my service, might take forward?
This guidance is part of a wider RCR initiative to provide education in AI, share expertise and experience of using AI in radiology and shape the future of AI in healthcare. The development of this guidance was funded by the Department of Health and Social Care, with oversight from Dominic Cushnan and the AI lab.
