RCR response to NHS England’s extension and review of Practitioner Health

Article by: Dr Katharine Halliday

Following NHS England's initial suggestion that Practitioner Health should halt new registrations from secondary care staff, it has been confirmed that the service will be extended for another year while a review is conducted.

The RCR, along with other Medical Royal Colleges, has written to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care and the Chief Executive of NHS England to raise concerns and seek assurances for the future provision of support for members.

Commenting on this development, Dr Katharine Halliday, President of the Royal College of Radiologists, said:

“Ensuring that all doctors have access to appropriate support is crucial for managing the often emotionally demanding roles we undertake. Halting Practitioner Health would have been entirely inappropriate, especially considering the immense pressure and demand our colleagues face amid record staff shortages. I am relieved that the service has been extended, and we will actively participate in the review to safeguard essential wellbeing services our members and fellows rely on.”
