New publications launched in the field of AI

We are pleased to announce the launch of two new artificial intelligence (AI) publications – AI deployment fundamentals for medical imaging and Auto-contouring in radiotherapy.

New technologies and digital innovations, like AI, promise to enable radiologists and oncologists improve patient outcomes and meet the ever-rising demand for their expertise. By streamlining processes and boosting their ability to detect and treat diseases, AI tools will help clinicians to focus their care where it is most urgently needed.

AI deployment fundamentals for medical imaging

This guidance aims to provide minimum standards for providers to deploy artificial AI solutions in radiology and focuses on the period between the algorithm achieving regulatory approval and its business-as-usual deployment.

Working Group Chair and RCR President Dr Katharine Halliday said: “The guidance provides a step-by-step guide for those wishing to implement AI into clinical workstreams and will be invaluable to both radiology departments and imaging networks.”

Auto-contouring in radiotherapy

AI-based auto-contouring systems are increasingly being used in radiotherapy departments. This guidance has been developed to support clinicians using these technologies in daily clinical practice. This document addresses the important aspects of auto-contouring commissioning, implementation and ongoing clinical use, and considers the wider impact on the radiotherapy multi-disciplinary team.

Working group chair Dr Alexandra Taylor said: “Auto-contouring systems have huge potential to impact radiotherapy treatment by improving consistency and quality, and they will enable the introduction of more complex approaches. We hope this guidance will help support the safe and effective use of this technology.”

We extend our gratitude to Dr Halliday and the working group involved in developing the AI deployment fundamentals for medical imaging guidance. We also extend our gratitude to the Department of Health and Social Care who funded the development of this guidance, with oversight from Dominic Cushnan and the AI Lab.

For auto-contouring in radiotherapy guidance, we extend our gratitude to Dr Katherine MacKay, Dr Alexandra Taylor and all the experts involved in the development.
