Empowering the future: Education and research in imaging AI

Article by: Dr Rhidian Bramley and Dr Amrita Kumar

The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) offers transformative opportunities in healthcare. However, to fully realise this potential, it is important to build strong foundations in education and research.

This will be a focus of discussion at this year’s RCR and NHS Global AI Conference, where we’ll be hosting a stream on education and research in imaging AI. This dedicated stream covers six sessions across two days, each addressing critical aspects of education and research in imaging AI, and will serve as a guidepost for clinicians, educators and researchers who are eager to navigate the transformation AI will bring to healthcare.

This stream is vital because the integration of AI in healthcare is no longer a distant vision – it is today’s reality. For AI to succeed in healthcare, professionals must not only understand its potential but also actively contribute to its development and ethical application. By attending this stream, participants will learn how to take an active role in shaping AI’s future, from launching groundbreaking research projects to fostering the next generation of AI-literate clinicians.

Essential tools

Day one will begin with a foundational session, ‘How to Get Started’, providing a step-by-step introduction to integrating AI into healthcare. Attendees will gain clarity on the basic principles and essential tools to embark on AI initiatives.

Following this, ‘Training’ explores the key skills and knowledge required for AI-driven healthcare, from basic competencies to designing comprehensive training programmes. The afternoon session, ‘Guidelines,’ highlights the ethical and regulatory considerations essential for compliant and impactful AI research and education.

On day two, our focus shifts to the practicalities of AI implementation. ‘Approvals’ demystifies the regulatory landscape, offering insights on how to navigate these often-complex processes. ‘Building Your Team’ examines strategies for creating interdisciplinary teams that bridge clinical expertise with technological innovation. The final session, ‘Platforms’, provides an overview of the cutting-edge tools and platforms crucial for driving research and education in imaging AI.
