Dr Nicky Thorp elected as Vice-President, Clinical Oncology

We’re delighted to announce that Dr Nicky Thorp has been elected as the incoming Vice-President, Clinical Oncology. Dr Thorp will officially start from 1 September 2025, when she will take over from the current Vice-President, Clinical Oncology, Dr Tom Roques.

Dr Thorp will head the Clinical Oncology Faculty for a three-year term until 2028 and ensure it leads the specialty across the UK and overseas.

Dr Thorp said: “I'm thrilled to learn that I'm to be the next Vice-President, Clinical Oncology. My ambition is to work towards a brighter future for our profession and our patients. This will be a team effort, and I look forward to collaborating with my fellow RCR Officers, the RCR staff and colleagues across the UK and beyond, to use influence, innovation and persuasion to address the challenges faced by our speciality in 2025.

“This is a great honour and privilege, and I hope that I can do justice to the role, continuing Tom's fantastic work in representing our Fellows and members with courage, integrity and good humour.”

Dr Thorp is a consultant clinical oncologist at The Christie NHS FT, specialising in paediatric radiotherapy and proton beam therapy. She trained in medicine at the University of Leicester, graduating in 1990 and completed her specialist oncology training at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre where she worked as a consultant for 20 years.

She brings extensive experience in leadership roles including most recently as Medical Director for Professional Practice at the RCR from 2021-2024. She is currently Co-lead for Wellbeing at the RCR and has previously served two terms on the CO Faculty Board.

Dr Tom Roques, Vice-President, Clinical Oncology, said: “I'm absolutely delighted that Nicky is returning to lead the CO Faculty. She will bring great wisdom and perspective to the role and will collaborate brilliantly with RCR contributors and staff, as well as with policymakers and other cancer leaders across the UK. Our specialty is in excellent hands.”
