CESR Pathway fuels one-third of new radiology consultants

The RCR is seeking new members for our Equivalence Committee to play a vital role in increasing the number of consultants in the UK workforce.

The Equivalence Committee is responsible for assessing applications received under the CESR/Portfolio Pathway route and sending recommendations to the GMC regarding individual applications for Specialist Registration. This ensures that radiology and oncology departments are led by consultants with the necessary competences.

Over the course of the last year, the committee has made a significant impact, including:

  • Applications increasing 82% in 2023 across clinical radiology (CR) and clinical oncology (CO).
  • Recommending 86% of applications in 2023 be granted across CR, CO and non-completion of training (CCT) for Specialist Registration – equating to 94 new consultants in the UK workforce.
  • Recommended Specialist Registration be granted to 110 new consultants (across CR, CO and non-CCT) – equating to 93% of applications recommended by the committee to date in 2024.
  • For the College year ending August 2024, successfully added a total of 385 doctors to the Specialist Register in CR – 260 by way of CCT and 125 by way of the CESR/Portfolio Pathway.

As a result of the work of the Equivalence Committee, CR consultants gaining their Specialist Registration through the CESR/Portfolio Pathway now account for one-third of the new consultant workforce.

Vacancies
We are currently looking for new committee members in both radiology and oncology specialties. By joining the committee, this is an opportunity for members to be actively involved in maintaining the high professional standards of the UK workforce. The deadline for applications is 30 November 2024.
