AI technology to help cut cancer waiting lists

Responding to the government announcement on AI technology to help cut cancer waiting lists, Dr Katharine Halliday said: 

“We warmly welcome any advancement that speeds up diagnosis and treatment for patients, and this AI tool certainly holds exciting potential. However, given the multiple barriers to AI implementation that the RCR has identified, further detail on how this AI tool will be rolled out 'within weeks' would be appreciated. The implementation and roll-out of AI must be strategic and delivered in partnership with doctors on the ground, or we risk improving one aspect of the patient journey while inadvertently compromising others. 

“We look forward to receiving more information about the AI tool itself, whether it's been shown to be effective on data reflective of the UK population. These details will help us feel more confident about its use and its impact on patients.”
