Following hospital posts in Birmingham, Dudley and Wolverhampton, Mike trained to be a radiologist in the West Midlands Training Scheme. He was appointed Consultant Radiologist in Wolverhampton in 1973, specialising in gastrointestinal and breast radiology.

Mike Hale was elected Chair of Wolverhampton Consultants Committee. He participated in many aspects of medical management in Wolverhampton, in particular with the transfer of the Royal Hospital services onto the New Cross Hospital site. This would lay the foundation for the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals Trust becoming a Regional Centre providing healthcare for a population of well over a million people.

His involvement in training radiology registrars over many years lead to his appointment as Head of the West Midlands Radiology Training Scheme. The training of British radiologists underwent radical change in the late 1990s and early noughties. Mike led that transformation in the West Midlands with great skill and calm.

Throughout his busy professional life, Mike was a most devoted husband to his wife Dilys, children Lisa and Iain and grandchildren. He was a rugby referee until he was in his 50s, a lifelong member of Old Halesonians RFC and in later years also enjoyed cycling and walking.
