New consultants’ welcome day

After completing her radiology training in London, Australia, Sheffield and Nottingham, Dr Halliday was appointed as a Consultant Paediatric Radiologist at Nottingham University Hospital in 1998. She has a special interest in the imaging of suspected physical abuse and provides expert opinions for cases throughout the UK. She was Chair of the British Society of Paediatric Radiology from 2010-2016 and chaired the working group for the updated guidance for imaging in cases of suspected physical abuse in children.

In September 2017, Dr Halliday was appointed National Clinical Lead for the Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) programme for Radiology, and the Radiology GIRFT report was published in July 2020. Dr Halliday took over as Clinical Director for Radiology at Nottingham University Hospitals in January 2021.

Dr Halliday's tenure as RCR President is 2022-2025.

Dr Louise Hanna is a consultant clinical oncologist at the Velindre Cancer Centre, Cardiff where she specialises in gynaecological cancer. She completed her medical training at the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford before undertaking her clinical oncology training at the Velindre Cancer Centre.

Dr Hanna has been involved with education and training at the RCR since being the trainee representative for Wales. As a consultant, she has been a member of the Clinical Oncology (CO) Specialty Training Board, has served on the CO Curriculum Committee as clinical lead for quality and more recently, worked alongside Dr Karen Tipples as the clinical lead for CO National Recruitment. 

Dr Hanna has experience as Associate Dean (Quality) within Health Education and Improvement Wales and as Assistant Medical Director for Education and Training at Velindre University NHS Trust. She was also the lead editor for the textbook Practical Clinical Oncology (Cambridge University Press).

Dr Stephen Harden is a consultant in cardiothoracic radiology at University Hospital Southampton, having been appointed in 2005.

He completed undergraduate medical training at the University of Cambridge and St Thomas’s Hospital in the University of London. He trained in Clinical Radiology in Wessex and undertook further training in Germany and the USA. His consultant clinical practice includes cardiac and thoracic cross-sectional imaging and PET/CT.

Before his current role, Dr Harden was the Medical Director for Education and Training in Clinical Radiology at the RCR from 2019-2022. He chaired the RCR Clinical Radiology Professional Learning and Development sub-committee from 2017-2019 and has been an FRCR part 2A examiner. Previously, he was President of the British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging, the first RCR travelling cardiac Professor, BIR Vice President, Head of Wessex School of Radiology and the senior cardiac editor for the British Journal of Radiology.

Dr Harden's tenure as Vice-President, Clinical Radiology at the RCR is 2023-2026.

Samuel is an independent financial planner, he has worked in financial services for over fifteen years’ and has gained a significant amount of knowledge and experience around all NHS pension schemes. This has enabled Samuel to become very efficient at diagnosing complex NHS pension issues and explaining how to solve them.

Dr Qaiser Malik is a consultant MSK radiologist and Clinical Director of Radiology at Mid and South Essex NHS Trust and the lead medical appraiser for Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital.

Dr Malik graduated from Imperial College School of Medicine. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer for University College London Medical School and the Clinical Lead for the East 2 Imaging Network. Qaiser also served on the RCR’s Scientific Programme Committee for seven years and was previously the RCR Newsletter editor for two years.

Dr Malik has a keen interest in musculoskeletal MRI and ultrasound (US), including US-guided procedures. He also specialises in imaging and treating sports injuries and has been involved in the care of elite athletes.

Dr Malik's tenure as Medical Director, Membership and Business at the RCR is 2023-2026.

Gemma is responsible for membership, member engagement, policy, press, public affairs, digital and our publications.  
 
A former journalist, she has led communications at the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, Ofsted and BookTrust. 

Dr Petra Jankowska trained as a clinical oncologist in London before becoming a consultant in Taunton in 2007. She specialises in head and neck, and lung cancers and has a particular interest in peer review of radiotherapy contouring and the development of supportive medical leadership.

From 2019 to 2024, Dr Jankowska was the Radiotherapy Quality and Safety Lead at the RCR. She was Oncology Service Lead at Taunton from 2010-16, Clinical Director of Oncology, Haematology and Palliative Care Services from 2016-2018, and Associate Medical Director from 2018-2022, with oncology, haematology, radiology, pathology, pharmacy and therapies services within her remit.

Dr Jankowska is also an active triallist, holding both Chief Investigator and Principal Investigator roles, is a contributing author to several textbooks and led the authorship of the 2nd edition of the RCR's guidance on Radiotherapy Target Volume Definition and Peer Review. She is committed to improving the safety and quality of patient care through the development of authentic, supportive and collaborative medical leadership.

Dr Jankowska's tenure as Medical Director, Professional Practice, Clinical Oncology at the RCR is 2024-2027.

Dr Robin Proctor is a consultant radiologist with a special interest in musculoskeletal radiology who works in the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. He has held several leadership roles there including Deputy Medical Director during the Covid-19 pandemic. 

Dr Proctor’s broad background in medicine includes several years as a General Practitioner and he has been a Fellow of the RCR since 2008. Prior to his current role he was a member of the RCR Equivalence Committee and the RCR representative for the national New Hospital Programme, having earlier been a subject matter expert for diagnostic imaging within that programme for NHS England. 

He has also been an elected member of the RCR Faculty Board for Clinical Radiology and was secretary of the British Society of Skeletal Radiologists. Dr Proctor has written numerous books that aid preparation for the FRCR examination in radiology. He was also involved in setting up the ‘Global Radiology’ project.  

Dr Proctor’s tenure as Medical Director, Professional Practice, Clinical Radiology at the RCR is 2024-2027.

Dr Anu Obaro is a consultant radiologist and PhD researcher studying bowel cancer imaging interpretation at St Mark’s Hospital, London. She is the recipient of the John Nichols Prize for Research 2020 and was awarded Diversity Champion - COVID Heart Hero Award 2021 for her COVID vaccine advocacy work. Anu is co-chair of the Independent Staff Insight Group which ensures an inclusive approach to developing Trust-wide strategies at London North West Healthcare Trust.  She is a passionate educator and racial equity advocate having presented talks on racism which have been viewed all over the world. As co-founder of RadReach she has a desire to increase the number of people from under-represented groups in radiology while also ensuring that they have an enriching and supportive training experience.

Nicky Thorp trained in medicine at the University of Leicester, graduating in 1990. She completed her specialist oncology training at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. She was appointed as a consultant clinical oncologist in 2001 at Clatterbridge with subspecialty interests in breast cancer, paediatric radiotherapy and late effects. In 2019 she took up her post at the Christie Hospital in Manchester specialising in photon and proton beam therapy for children. Her research interests are in paediatric tumours and radiotherapy quality assurance. She was previously radiotherapy lead for the NCRI CCL CNS Subgroup and is UK radiotherapy lead for the pan-European SIOP Ependymoma II study.    

Nicky was Medical Director for Professional Practice for Clinical Oncology at the Royal College of Radiologists from September 2021 to August 2024 and and is currently Co-lead for Wellbeing at the RCR. She previously served two terms on the RCR CO Faculty Board.    

Nicky was Associate Medical Director at Clatterbridge between 2010 and 2016. Her roles included clinical lead for the new build Clatterbridge Cancer Centre-Liverpool. She served two terms on the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) Executive and is past chair of the CCLG Radiotherapy and Neuro-oncology Groups.
