Annual Trainee Oncology Meeting (ATOM) 2024

Dr Alison May Berner is an Academic Clinical Lecturer in Medical Oncology at Barts Cancer Institute and part-time specialty doctor in adult gender identity at the Tavistock and Portman. She leads the UK cancer and transition service at Chelsea Westminster, providing clinical advice for gender diverse patients with active cancer or genetic cancer predisposition. Her research focuses on improving cancer care for LGBTQ+ populations, and sex- and gender-based differences in cancer incidence. She is also President of the British Association of Gender Identity Specialists and a trustee of the Outpatients charity for LGBTQ+ people affected by cancer. 

Dr Chambers is a Clinical Oncology Consultant working in Torbay Hospital in Devon. He specialises in Head and Neck, and colorectal cancer management. He has a particular interest in education and training and is the Training Programme Director for the Peninsula region. His favourite pastime is sitting in a coffee shop with a good book. 

Mary is a clinical oncology trainee based in the East of England and is currently vice-chair of the National Oncology Trainee Collaborative for Healthcare Research (NOTCH). 

She currently holds a Cancer Research UK Clinical Research Training Fellowship at the University of Cambridge, undertaking a PhD examining the role of cellular senescence in non-small cell lung cancer. 

She is also an honorary specialist registrar in clinical oncology at Addenbrooke's Hospital working on translational clinical trials as part of CRUK RadNet Cambridge, with additional interests in frailty and geriatric oncology.  

Dr Nicole Dorey is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Torbay and South Devon Foundation Trust Hospital, with a site-specific interest in Thoracic Oncology and Gynae-Oncology. Dr Dorey is the SABR lead for the Trust.

Dr Leonie Eastlake is a consultant clinical oncologist working at the Royal Cornwall Hospital specialising within head and neck, thyroid and gynaecological cancers. 

She is also lead for the acute oncology service and ongoing development as well as educational/clinical supervisor for trainees. Previously involved in cancer and COVID-19 project with associated publications.  

Ian completed clinical oncology training in the Southwest peninsula before undertaking a Radiation Oncology Fellowship in Vancouver.  He is now a consultant in Exeter treating thoracic and lower GI cancers with a specialist interest in SABR.  

Dr Louise Hanna is a consultant clinical oncologist working at the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff, specialising in gynaecological cancer.  

She has been involved in medical education and training throughout her career and has had several roles within the Royal College of Radiologists before becoming Medical Director for Education and Training.  

Dr Hanna is also the clinical lead for the Wales Cancer Network Gynaecological Cancer Site Group and an editor of the textbook Practical Clinical Oncology.   

Trained in the Southwest, Fellowship in Royal Adelaide Hospital, South Australia 2020-21 with interest in SRS/SABR/Protons. Currently working in Plymouth Oncology Centre, specialising in lung, uro-oncology and SABR. 

Dr Rosie Mew is a clinical oncology registrar in the Peninsular deanery and is an Academic Clinical Fellow at the University of Exeter funded by the NIHR. She has undertaken work as a medical adviser with BioNTech, supporting their UK partnership focussing on cancer vaccine and next generation immunotherapy trials. 

Dr Helen Saxby is a clinical oncology consultant working at Torbay Hospital.

Currently working as a consultant and educational lead at University Hospitals Plymouth. Previously worked as a consultant for nearly 20 years in South Africa and Ghana. Extensive experience of clinical oncology, teaching and training in a developing world setting.    

Dr Talbot studied medicine at UCL medical school and graduated in 1999. He undertook specialist training in clinical oncology in the Southwest and became a consultant clinical oncologist at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in 2009, specialising in skin cancers, thoracic malignancies and sarcoma. 

Mohini trained in London and has been a consultant in clinical oncology in the Southwest since 2009 specialising in the management of prostate and bladder cancers.   
 
She is an active researcher having been PI of >40 clinical trials and holds several posts of the NIHR (uro oncology subspecialty lead, cancer specialty research lead, and clinical research specialty lead for cluster 1 with the SWP; CRN), as well as being the national uro oncology subspecialty champion for the NIHR.  She was awarded the joint Royal College of Physicians and NIHR research award in 2018 for research leadership within the NHS.  Mohini also chaired the Bladder Consensus Steering Group for the RCR, with the statements published in 2023.
