Advanced Educational Supervisor

Our new one-day practical, theory-based course will give experienced supervisors the practical tools required to address complex training challenges. It combines interactive workshops and lectures to cover essential topics such as neurodiversity and reasonable adjustments, de-stressing the burn-out, supporting international graduates, identifying and developing residents requiring extra support, and fostering psychological safety, enabling participants to develop practical skills to address these challenges effectively.

6 CPD points will be awarded on completion of this course. Please note this course will not be available to view on-demand post event.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course delegates will be able to:

Identify and evaluate strategies to successfully support residents through common barriers and challenges
Assess and analyse their own confidence, resilience and strategies in supervising residents who require additional support
Identify when and how to make reasonable adjustments for those in training

Dr Hyland is a consultant radiologist with clinical subspecialty interests in gastrointestinal and sarcoma imaging and is currently the Head of School (HoS) of Radiology, managing the training scheme in Yorkshire and Humber.

Rachel has an extensive background in medical education, having been an RCR tutor, education lead and training programme director prior to becoming head of school. She has served on the Curriculum Committee and Specialty Training Board for the RCR, completed a PG certificate in medical education from the University of Leeds and has been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2017.

Rachel is an examiner for the RCR FRCR 2b exam and has trained as a coach for HEEYH, coaching trainees and trainers, and regularly appraises consultant colleagues and educational faculty. She has extensive experience managing trainees who are failing to progress, delivering training to educational supervisors and advising on ARCP panels locally and nationally.

Dr Conroy graduated and completed her early medical training in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and then returned to Manchester and commence her oncology training at The Christie in 2009.

During her time at the Christie she won the learning assessment test at the 2012 ESO Masterclass in clinical oncology - first out of 62 young oncologists from 28 countries. She spent a year as a clinical observer in a large teaching hospital in Sydney, Australia before returning to The Christie to take up a post as a Consultant.
